How MBTI compatibility works
MBTI compatibility is not a precise science, but it's also not arbitrary. Patterns in how types relate emerge from differences in cognitive function stacking—the order and type of mental processes each person naturally relies on. When two people share functions but in different positions, they often find each other simultaneously familiar and stimulating. When their functions conflict significantly, misunderstandings are more predictable.
This guide presents commonly observed compatibility patterns. They're useful as starting points—not as rules. Individual maturity, communication skills, shared values, and life circumstance all play a larger role in any specific relationship than type alone.

Understanding the patterns
The strongest pairings tend to involve complementary cognitive functions—types that balance each other's strengths and weaknesses without completely opposing each other's operating styles. A classic example: INFJ and ENTP share the same four cognitive functions in different orders, creating a dynamic that's simultaneously challenging and deeply compatible.
The most challenging pairings often occur between types that share no functions in common, or whose dominant functions directly clash. An ENTJ and an INFP, for example, lead with opposite judging functions (Te vs Fi), which can create fundamental disagreements about how decisions should be made.
What matters more than type matching
Every MBTI compatibility framework comes with the same caveat: these are tendencies, not destinies. Some of the best relationships involve type combinations that conventional frameworks rate as challenging. Some of the worst involve conventionally 'ideal' pairings.
What actually determines relationship quality: emotional maturity, communication clarity, aligned values on the things that matter most, and the willingness of both people to understand each other's operating style. Type awareness is a tool for understanding, not a filter for exclusion.
If you want to explore connections in practice—not just on paper—Pdb: Personality & Friends lets you connect directly with any type. You can filter by type, read personality-based profiles, and start conversations with people who are already interested in this framework.
Check your specific chemistry
Beyond general compatibility patterns, Pdb offers a chemistry calculator that shows the specific dynamic between any two types—including the named relationship type (Alter Ego, Twinflame, Teammate, etc.) and its chemistry percentage.
The calculator is a fast way to explore any pairing you're curious about. Pick two types and it shows exactly where they fall in the 16-relationship spectrum, what that dynamic looks like in practice, and how it compares to other pairings. Useful for understanding an existing relationship, evaluating a potential match, or exploring how your type relates to others.
